Characteristics of European Needles vs. Korean Needles

The previous installment explored the differing aesthetic preferences in medical aesthetics between Asians and Westerners (using Europeans and Americans as examples). This distinction also reflects divergent clinical research directions for medical aesthetic materials and varying focuses on efficacy studies between the two groups.

European and American medical aesthetic needles are primarily divided into three major categories:
1. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) for hydration and plumping

The most common material, with classic examples like the American brand Juvéderm utilizing Vycross technology. It offers high integration and is suitable for use on the lips, nasolabial folds, and cheeks . It provides a longer duration of effect (lasting up to 1-2 years) and has a relatively uniform texture, making it ideal for deep-layer filling or bony support.

2. Botulinum Toxin

Established brands like Botox from the U.S. and Xeomin from Germany, which emphasizes a pure formulation, are typically used to relax overactive muscles, improve dynamic wrinkles formed by facial expressions (such as crow's feet and forehead lines), and achieve facial slimming effects . Due to their higher purity and lower diffusion rate, they are well-suited for treating delicate areas.

3. Collagen Stimulators

For instance, products like DermaVeil (a dermal filler containing the primary component Plla, or poly-L-lactic acid) and Ellanse (a filler centered on PCL, or polycaprolactone) stimulate the skin's own collagen production to achieve a natural skin-tightening effect with longer-lasting results.

Korean acupuncture is relatively fundamental and widely applicable:
1. Skin Booster

Formulated with hyaluronic acid blended with comprehensive nutrients—including vitamins, amino acids, and other growth factor essences—this product focuses on daily care benefits such as deep hydration, improving skin condition, enhancing radiance, and reducing fine lines.

2. Rejuran

Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN), extracted from salmon, is widely used to aid skin regeneration, repair the skin barrier, enhance elasticity, and improve scarring due to its high compatibility with the human body.

3. Exosomes

Stem cell-derived exosomes for anti-aging, skin regeneration, and cellular repair.

4. Hyaluronic Acid Filler

Higher concentrations of hyaluronic acid are used for localized facial filling and contouring, such as lip augmentation, nose enhancement, and tear trough correction. This differs from the hydrating effects of hydrating injections . It emphasizes softness and a natural appearance, making it suitable for superficial filling (tear troughs, lips).

5. Botox

Commonly used to reduce wrinkles and slim the face, it features strong diffusion and fast-acting results.

European needles position themselves toward "research," "high-end," and "classic" applications. With a long-standing history, these brands emphasize clinical data and safety, focusing on anti-aging and facial structural rejuvenation. Korean needles center on "value for money," "Asian features," and "fashion trends" as key attributes. They prioritize the unique market structure of Asian consumers, offering relatively affordable prices. These needles excel at creating a dewy, youthful complexion and tend to revitalize the skin's surface.

Most European needles have obtained EU CE certification and US FDA approval, standards widely recognized globally. Korean needles are certified by the KFDA, with some brands holding NMPA certification in China. However, regulatory differences across countries may affect product versions. Regardless of the choice, the primary focus should be on achieving substantive improvement based on individual facial structure and the combined causes of the condition.
